Debbie Davies
6/27/2009

Debbie Davies

"Soulful Blues & Rock n' Roll"

Saturday, June 27th

Show times 8pm & 10pm

Davies rise to the upper echelon of blues music started at an early age as she absorbed the music heard constantly in her home. Her (professional) musician parents were either sitting at the piano or spinning discs on their turntable, filling the air with the sounds of big band jazz, harmony vocal groups, or the pop icons of the day. But the young Davies was particularly attracted to the bluesier sounds of her father’s Ray Charles records, and by the age of 12 realized that her affinity for an instrument was not for the piano, but for the guitar.

“She wields an electric guitar as if it were a wand.” - Los Angeles Times

When:    Saturday March 21st at 9:00 pm
Who:      Three The Hard Way
Where:   North by Northwest

"Three The Hard Way"
The heart and soul of "Three The Hard Way" consists of three men of very different backgrounds. Scott Paynter founded and led the Baltimore-based reggae band "Jah Works", toured the United States, Jamaica, Europe, Greenland, the South Pacific and the Far East, playing thousands of shows over a span of fifteen years. Paul Downie is a roots reggae drummer, who started out as a percussionist, playing with just about every notable reggae artist in Philadelphia. He's also a painter in the Philadelphia Mural Arts Project. Will Paynter is a self-taught musician, singer and songwriter who for 20 years traveled the world in the United States Army. His music sung in Spanish and English, is a reflection of his world travel and cultural experiences.
Joining the core trio are 3 other talented musicians, L.A. Stevenson, Tony Love and Dean Sophocles. L.A. brings the haunting sax that sends tingles up your spine and Tony, another founding member of "Jah Works" carries an energy in his voice and guitar playing that speaks to you for days after the show. Dean is the newest member to the "Hard Way" crew and he brings a solid rock and jazz vibe to the mix that will really spice up the groove. He also plays the violin and mandolin. "Three The Hard Way" brings the musical influences and passions of these six unique individuals together to form a new sound that is being heard in Philadelphia. When you come to a "Three The Hard Way" show, you will hear reggae and the blues, you will hear jazz and folk, country and soul. They put their spin on some classic cover songs alongside some amazing original compositions that you will surely be hearing again and again.

Surdo Ladies PhillyBloco is modeled after the blocos of Rio de Janeiro, with their large percussion sections and harmonic/vocal accompaniment. Our group is comprised of 14 drummers, an electric guitarist, a bass guitarist, and a vocalist. The group performs a diverse repertoire made popular by both Brazilian and non-Brazilian artists including: Olodum, Timbalada,  Monobloco, Bob Marley and Stevie Wonder.  The one constant in all of our music is a heavy percussive element (14 drummers!) that we use to explore the tremendous range of Brazilian rhythms, applying our own unique creativity and energy to each arrangement.  Our music is extremely high energy, full of passion and feeling. We want to make people dance, feel good, and give them something to celebrate every time they see us perform!

The B-side Prophets & Dave Quicks Band
4/10/2007

B-side Prophets

The B-Sides Prophets came to fruition in the Fall of 2006 when a collection of acoustic demos by singer/guitarist TJ Leis caught the ear of musical duo Shady Groove, comprised of Matt Kresge and Bernie Gillespie.  Matt and Bernie liked what they heard and felt their tight harmonies and skilled musicianship could add some interesting color and flavor to these compositions.   The three agreed to get together and work out new arrangements for these songs.  After recruiting drummer Ryan Burns, The B-Side Prophets made their presence known almost immediately, landing a showcase spot at the prestigious World Café ‘Philly Rising’ open stage after only their first gig.  Furthermore, this showcase performance caught the attention of prominent Philly promoter David Wannup, who invited The B-Sides to perform at The Tin Angel.  After 2 years, a full length album (Down In Illadelphia) and airplay on WXPN’s Leicht Lunch, The B-Sides haven’t stopped making their rounds of Philly finest venues, playing everywhere from The Fire, North Star Bar, and Trocadero Main Stage.   The recent addition of percussionist Jay Rose and new drummer Mark Swartly has enabled the B-Side Prophets to dive into new musical realms previously uncharted, adding touches of Latin and African rhythms to their repertoire.  2009 should prove to be the most exciting year yet for The B-Side Prophets.

Dave Quicks Band

Lead singer and guitarist of great Philly bands Princes of Babylon and BurnDown All-Stars, Dave Quicks brings his solo band to the NXNW Friday April 10 to play songs from his new record "Common Knowledge".  Dave has been heard on WXPN and seen on Fuse TV.  He has toured the country and shared the stage with acts like The Roots, G Love and Steel Pulse.
